The large standard Poodle is the oldest of the three sizes (standard, miniature, and toy). Often associated with France, Poodles may have actually first been bred in Russia or Iberia. The first recorded image of a Poodle is found on Roman coins. Historians agree that it was largely the French that created the Poodles we know today. As the breed grew in popularity with the French court, demand for smaller animals resulted in the toy and miniature varieties of Poodle.

Poodles are generally social dogs that enjoy the company of the entire family. Strangers don’t seem to faze Poodles, although they are often greeted with a warning bark. Any friendly overtures will be met with instant acceptance by most Poodles. Although Poodles do have a strong prey drive, they can be taught to live peacefully with other small animals. Birds, however, seem particularly challenging for Poodles, and a bird should never be left unsupervised in a Poodle’s presence.

Poodles were originally bred to retrieve waterfowl, and the unusual clipping styles seen in show dogs reflect this heritage. The Poodle’s hair is cut short to allow the legs freedom of movement for swimming and kept long over the joints and vital organs. Pet Poodles require hours of grooming attention and need to be clipped on a regular basis, especially around the feet, face, and under the tail.

Poodles are energetic and eager to please, but can become devious and cause trouble if not given enough exercise. A brief walk of a good romp around the house or yard is all most Poodles need to stay happy. Poodles enjoy playing games with their owners and will readily learn new ways to play.

Poodles are famous for their ability to do whatever is asked of them. Poodles are found in circuses and animal acts around the world because of their intelligence, adaptability, and natural desire to perform. Anyone can train a Poodle, especially if treats are involved.
