Although there is no definite evidence of how the breed began, some historians speculate that the Boston Terrier was the result of bored stable hands breeding their masters’ expensive pure bred dogs. Although originally bred from fighting breeds, the Boston Terrier was later prized as a family companion and all traces of aggression have been removed from the breed. Boston Terriers are alert, gentle, obedient dogs that make excellent family pets. Boston Terriers do well with children, although they can be overly boisterous when young. Boston Terriers can learn to live with small animals as long as they are socialized properly. Boston Terriers have short, smooth coats with a fine texture. Boston Terriers require little grooming and need only a weekly brushing. The breed is prone to eye infections, so the Boston Terrier’s eyes should be cleaned regularly. Boston Terriers tend to be calm dogs and demand little in the way of exercise. A quiet stroll around the neighborhood or some vigorous play in the back yard is all a Boston Terrier needs to stay happy and healthy. Boston Terriers are intelligent and eager to please their owners. While occasionally strong willed, most Boston Terriers will respond well to basic training. Boston Terriers need their humans to be the “alpha dog” in order to be comfortable, so a firm hand in training is recommended.
