Pomeranians are descended from the Spitz-type sled dogs found in the arctic north. Pomeranians are named after the Pomerania region along the Baltic Sea in Europe, and the original dogs were much larger than the type seen most often today. In the late 19th century, British dog breeders developed the smaller version of the Pomeranian as a companion dog suitable for city living.

Pomeranians are feisty little dogs that enjoy rough play much like their larger counterparts. Underneath the Pomeranian’s small stature and impressive coat is a sturdy sled dog that retains many of the independent qualities found in larger arctic breeds. While friendly and loving to their owners, Pomeranians can be wary of strangers and will sound a noisy alarm whenever one approaches. Because they will quickly defend themselves around kids, Pomeranians are not suitable for families with small children.

One look at a Pomeranian will tell you that this little dog requires a lot of grooming. A Pomeranian’s thick, fluffy coat must be brushed extensively on a daily basis. Pomeranians rarely need baths, or trimming, but they are prone to teeth problems and require daily care.

Pomeranians enjoy exercise, but only require a moderate 30 minute walk each day. However, if you are inclined to do more, a Pomeranian will gladly follow you for miles thanks to it sled dog heritage.

Pomeranians are clever, observant dogs that can quickly learn new tricks and commands. However, the cheeky Pomeranian can often turn the tables and train her human through subtle canine manipulation. Those unfamiliar with the breed or basic training techniques may wish to consult a professional.
