American Foxhound
Information - Dog Breed Profiles Information Center
The American Foxhound is a sweet, gentle and loving breed who shows intensity when he hunts. They are great family dogs due to the high level of loyalty they show to "the pack." They do need constant socialization and ample exercise else the owner may find that the American Foxhound will find something to occupy their time and it may not be the most constructive (ie tearing things apart, scratching the doors and relieving the countertops of all their contents).

This is a very intelligent breed and can easily learn how to open a gate or clear a fence so they can go on a short sniffing trip. Once the hound has found a scent of interest, they will pretty much ignore any and all commands. For this, be careful letting the American Foxhound out without a lead and outside of the fence. He may listen to you most of the time, but if he catches the scent of something interesting, he could trail it for hours, completely ignoring you.

Due to their active nature, apartment life is not recommended for this breed.

Additional Personality Information:

The American Foxhound's reactions to strangers can vary widely. They can be very protective while others can be very friendly.

Do not look to the American Foxhound to be a watchdog. It is not how they were bred. In fact, they will more than likely greet a stranger more with apprehension and then anticipate a good pat on the head.

They tend to be excellent with children although you may watch them with non-canine pets such as birds and cats.
